Dry-type sprinkler heads are commonly used in unheated or cold environments, such as attics, parking garages, freezers, and warehouses, where there is a risk of water freezing and causing damage to the system. They are typically installed in a piping network connected to a pressurized air or nitrogen-filled dry pipe system.
When a fire breaks out and the ambient temperature around the sprinkler head reaches a certain threshold, typically around 155°F (68°C) or higher, the heat-sensitive element of the sprinkler head, known as the glass bulb or fusible link, ruptures. This allows the pressurized air or nitrogen to escape, which then releases the water into the piping system and subsequently through the opened sprinkler head, distributing it onto the fire or heat source.
By using a dry-type sprinkler system, potential water damage is minimized because water is not stored in the pipes until the sprinkler head is activated by the heat of a fire. This type of system provides effective fire protection in environments where freezing temperatures are a concern.
