Q1: Why do I need a strainer in my fire protection system?
Water pipes aren't clean. They contain rust, scale, dirt, gravel, and debris from installation. That debris will damage pump impellers, scratch valve seats, and clog sprinkler heads. A strainer catches all that before it reaches your equipment. Cheap insurance.
Q2: Where should I install the strainer?
Install it on the inlet side of whatever you're protecting – upstream of the fire pump, upstream of control valves, and upstream of pressure reducing valves. Always install with the flow arrow pointing in the correct direction.
Q3: How often should I clean the strainer screen?
At least once a year during the annual sprinkler system test. If your water supply is dirty – from a river, pond, or old cast iron pipe – clean it more often. Check the pressure drop across the strainer. If it increases, clean it
