SR – Standard Response
Standard Response sprinklers have been around for over 100 years. They work. They're proven. They're cheaper than quick response. The bulb is 5mm in diameter. It takes a little longer to heat up. That's intentional. In some fires, a slower response is better. It allows time for the fire to grow to a size that the sprinkler can handle. It also prevents false alarms from minor heat sources.
Response Time Index (RTI): SR sprinklers have an RTI of 80 or higher. That's a technical measure of how fast the sprinkler responds. Bigger number = slower.
Where to use SR:
- Warehouses with high ceilings
- Manufacturing plants
- Storage facilities
- Parking garages
- Anywhere with normal fire growth rates
Pros: Cheaper, widely available, proven reliability.
Cons: Slower to respond, may allow fire to grow larger.

QR – Quick Response
Quick Response sprinklers are newer. They respond faster. Much faster.
The bulb is 3mm in diameter. Smaller bulb means less mass to heat up. The sprinkler opens in half the time of an SR sprinkler.
