What Is a Water Curtain Fire Sprinkler?
It's not a standard fire sprinkler. Standard sprinklers put water on a fire to put it out. A water curtain sprinkler puts water in the air – in the shape of a curtain – to stop a fire from getting through.
Think of it as a water wall. A vertical sheet of water that blocks heat, smoke, and flames from passing from one side to the other. It doesn't necessarily put out the fire. It contains the fire. Keeps it where it started. Protects the other side.
The nozzle takes pressurized water and sprays it out in a fan shape – usually 140° or 160° wide . The water forms a continuous curtain at a specific width and thickness . That curtain absorbs heat, blocks radiant energy, and stops smoke from moving through openings.
These are open nozzles. No glass bulb. No fusible link. They don't activate by heat. They're connected to a deluge valve that opens when a fire detection system or manual release is triggered . When the valve opens, all the water curtain nozzles on that system discharge at once.

Where Do You Use Water Curtain Sprinklers?
- Building openings. Doors, windows, and other openings in fire-rated walls. If you have a large opening that can't be closed with a fire door, a water curtain is an approved alternative . It stops fire from passing through the opening.
- Stages and theaters. The proscenium opening – the big arch above the stage. A water curtain separates the stage (where the fire is) from the audience seating area . Keeps the audience safe while the stage burns.
- Atriums. Large open spaces in buildings. Water curtains protect the glass walls around atriums – keeping a fire on one floor from spreading to the floor above .

Clean as needed: Debris can clog the small nozzle openings. Clean with a soft brush. Don't use a metal tool – it will scratch the brass.
Replace damaged nozzles: If a nozzle is bent, corroded, or clogged – replace it. Water curtains depend on a precise spray pattern. Damaged nozzles create gaps in the curtain.
