What Is a Water Alarm Check Valve?
It's the brain of a wet pipe fire sprinkler system. It sits between the water supply and the sprinkler pipes, doing two jobs at once.
First, it's a check valve. Water flows one way – from the supply into the system. It can't flow backward. That keeps the water supply clean and the system pressurized.
Second, it's an alarm trigger. When a sprinkler opens, water starts flowing. The valve detects that flow and sends water to a mechanical bell – the water motor gong. The bell rings. People hear it. They call the fire department.
The valve also has a retard chamber. That's a small tank on the side that stops false alarms. Water pressure in the system isn't always steady – pumps start and stop, valves open and close. The retard chamber soaks up those pressure bumps. Only steady, continuous flow from a real fire makes it through to ring the bell .
This is not a complicated device. It's a big piece of ductile iron with a rubber-faced clapper, a few gauges and valves, and a delay chamber. But when a fire starts, it needs to work perfectly. No second chances .
